LONGi has supplied high-efficiency back contact modules from its for a 1.55 MW rooftop photovoltaic installation at the Makado Beek shopping center in the Netherlands. The system was developed and installed by Generation Green for 3W Real Estate and has been connected to the grid since January 2025.
The installation comprises approximately 3,000 LONGi back contact modules from the Hi-MO series with a power rating of 535 Wp. It is designed to supply a significant share of the shopping center’s electricity demand, with around 85 percent of the generated energy consumed directly on site. The project supports cost savings and contributes to lower operational emissions.
Complex rooftop conditions and continuous operations shape system design and execution
Makado Beek is one of the largest shopping centers in the Limburg region, with around four million visitors annually. Its energy demand is driven by daily commercial operations, making on-site generation a relevant measure to stabilize energy costs and improve supply security.
The project presented specific technical challenges. The circular shape of the rooftop required a tailored layout to maximize the use of available space. In addition, installation had to be carried out while the shopping center remained fully operational, requiring careful coordination of logistics, lifting processes, and safety measures to avoid disruption to visitors and tenants.
Generation Green implemented a customized installation approach, including precise measurement of the roof geometry and coordinated use of cranes and lifting equipment. The selected module type enabled high energy output within limited space constraints. Its anti-dust characteristics support stable performance and help reduce maintenance requirements over time.
“Projects like Makado Beek show how photovoltaic systems can be integrated into existing commercial infrastructure under complex conditions,” said Jori Xu, Sales Manager for C&I at LONGi Solar Benelux. "The combination of efficient module technology and careful project execution allowed our partners to deliver a system that performs reliably while the site remains fully in use."
From the owner’s perspective, the project forms part of a broader effort to modernize the shopping center and improve its environmental performance. In addition to reducing electricity costs, the system is expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 735 tonnes per year, while delivering annual energy cost savings of around €125,000.
LONGi and Generation Green have worked together on multiple commercial and industrial projects in Europe. The Makado Beek installation reflects a continued focus on delivering photovoltaic solutions for high-demand commercial environments where space, operational continuity, and performance are critical.
