China’s energy transition is accelerating, and industrial enterprises play a decisive role. As major consumers of electricity, they are, just like European businesses, under growing pressure to cut costs, reduce emissions, and secure reliable power for production.

Only weeks after the launch of LONGi’s Hi-MO X10 Guardian Light Design, the back contact module for light-constrained roofs has already been put into action. In Hangzhou, a city southwest of Shanghai, Aozhan Energy Co., Ltd. has completed China’s first grid-connected power station deploying LONGi Light Design modules.

Built on the 5,000-square-meter rooftop of Hangzhou Shujie Hygiene Products Co., Ltd., the 1.4 MW project generates around 1.5 million kilowatt-hours of electricity every year. For Shujie, that means annual savings of about 860,000 yuan (≈ €112,000) in electricity costs and an additional 100,000 yuan (≈ €13,000) in revenue from power sales.

Meeting the needs of energy-intensive industries

Hangzhou Shujie produces diapers, wet wipes, and nursing pads, all of which require a continuous and stable electricity supply for drying, processing, and packaging. Relying solely on grid power had exposed the company to fluctuating energy prices, while traditional coal-based supply conflicted with its sustainability goals.

By turning to solar, the company found a solution that reduces its energy bills, cuts emissions, and ensures greater independence from the grid.

Light Design modules enable solar on Hangzhou Shujie’s low load-bearing roof

After assessing various technologies and modules to cover the needs of the business, Aozhan Energy’s decision for LONGi lightweight module was guided by three critical challenges in industrial rooftop PV: load-bearing capacity, fire safety, and performance.

At just 7.2 kg/m², the Hi-MO X10 Guardian Light Design modules are around 30% lighter than conventional single-glass TOPCon panels. For a 10,000 m² roof, this reduces structural load by more than 30 tons. The company also avoided the cost of additional reinforcement measures.

The module also incorporates safety features that comply with strict fire protection standards, providing added security for industrial applications

With a conversion efficiency of 24.8%, each module delivers up to 140 W more than comparable lightweight products. Combined with a 33% reduction in BOS (balance of system) costs, the design enables more capacity and higher yields within the same roof area.

LONGi and Aozhan Energy ensure smooth project delivery

A dedicated team from Aozhan Energy and LONGi oversaw every stage of the project, from rooftop survey and design through installation, commissioning, and grid connection. Today, the plant is delivering steady output and has already proven its ability to meet performance targets.

For Aozhan Energy, the project is part of a larger strategy. Founded in 2021, the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aozhan Industrial, specializing in distributed wind, solar, and storage. It already manages more than 200 MW of distributed PV projects across Zhejiang, Henan, Anhui, Shandong, and Fujian, and has committed itself to safe, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions along the Belt and Road.

Financial gains strengthen the case for Light Design rooftop solar

This Hangzhou project demonstrates how new technology can overcome traditional barriers to rooftop PV adoption. By combining lightweight construction with high efficiency and strong safety standards, the Hi-MO X10 Guardian Light Design module opens the door for more companies to turn unused roof space into a reliable source of clean energy. Beyond the technical benefits, the economics are equally compelling: in Europe, avoiding costly roof reinforcement can save up to €150,000–€200,000 per megawatt, while in China the Hangzhou installation already generates annual savings of about €112,000 and additional revenues of €13,000. Over the long run, such projects deliver substantial financial gains, strengthening competitiveness while advancing low-carbon industrial production.
